Feed the Elephants and Giraffes
Want to see the world from a giraffe’s perspective? Our summer public feeding demonstrations will let you do just that! During the demonstration, our keepers will tell you all about these long-necked animals and the other animals in their enclosure, which include Impalas and Greater Kudus. After the presentation, you’ll get the opportunity to climb onto the platforms in front of the giant spotted animals’ enclosure. From here, you can look the giraffes straight in the eye, and feed them with twigs, leaves and branches. They’ll take the food from your hands with their moist blue tongues – which can be up to 40cm in length. Don’t miss this experience!
Our Asian elephants are always happy to receive an extra snack or two. The pachyderms reach out of their enclosure to take tasty treats with their agile trunks. Their favourite foods are fresh fruit and vegetables, which are available from the Hagenbeck Information Office at the Main Entrance. Foliage for the giraffes and vegetables for the elephants can also be obtained from our volunteers from the Friends of Hagenbeck Zoo in return for a small donation.
